Tragic Kingdom

Tragic Kingdom

It’s a not so happy time in the Magic Kingdom.  Orlando is home to Disney World, also known as the “happiest place on earth.”  But don’t tell that to the Orlando Magic.  Apparently Orlando center Dwight Howard wants head coach Stan Van Gundy fired!  Why?  Who knows!  Van Gundy knows it, the players know it and now the press knows it, thanks to an interesting press conference held by Van Gundy earlier this week.  This private feud turned public is causing larger waves in the Magic locker room than Typhoon Lagoon does at Disney and the 7th wave is on its way!

All season Howard has flip-flopped more often than a politician on whether or not he wants to be traded from Orlando or stay put.  Orlando ended up keeping him which I think was a big mistake.  He has done nothing but disrupt the locker room, spread rumors and cause waves between he and his head coach.  Van Gundy said he has spoke with his management and confirmed that Howard stated he wanted him fired.  Naturally Howard denies all allegations and claims he and Van Gundy have “respect” for each other and need to be on the “same page.”  Check out this uh, strange interview that gets a bit awkward near the end:

Let me spell it out for you Dwight.  You are acting like a child!  You need diapers!  You are slowly helping your team, the Magic, right out of this playoff race and there is nothing magical about that.  I hope you miss the playoffs and you grow up, although if you miss the playoffs your coach will likely get fired, but I guess that’s what you want anyway!  Van Gundy is almost in a no win situation and that is unfortunate.  When franchise players pout and get their way it really upsets me.  If I did that every time I was unhappy at work, I would get fired.  Dwight, I would never sign you to a contract even if I needed a big stiff like you on my team!  NEVER!

Perfection!

Perfection!

Finishing 39-1 would have been utter failure.  Finishing 40-0 meant you would be the champs!  No other women’s college basketball team has finished a season with a record like that…EVER, until tonight.  The Baylor Lady Bears basketball team capped off a perfect season by winning the women’s NCAA Championship by defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Tuesday night.

Perfection is hard to come by.  In fact many would say there is no such thing, but I would beg to differ.  When you play 40 games and win all of them and do it in such dominating fashion, you simply can’t get any better.  Frankly, Baylor made it look easy.  It helps when you have arguably the most dominating women’s player the game has ever seen.  Yes, I’m talking about Brittany Griner.  You read about her in my previous blog.  She saved her best game for last finishing with 26 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks.  The final score was 80-61.

After the game Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said of Griner “I think she’s one of a kind. I think she’s like a guy playing with women,” adding that the 6-foot-8 junior is the best post player she’s ever seen.  Good thing I’m not the head coach, I might have blurted out, “she’s like a man playing amongst boys.”  But then like everyone else, I would have just retracted my statement by saying that it was taken out of context and wasn't what I meant.  To no surprise, that’s exactly what coach McGraw did, saying her comments were meant to be “complimentary.”   Really?  I doubt it.  Oh, in case you were wondering her name is really Muffet…don’t call her Muff.

Congratulations if you had Baylor going all the way in the women’s tournament, tonight you were vindicated.  The only question I have is why the hell is Robert Griffin III posing in pictures and celebrating with the team?  He even climbed up the ladder and cut down part of the net, which is typically only done by the team that wins the championship.  It is not something fans or alumni do.  He made this victory his own personal party.  I go to Sonoma State but I don’t pose in team pictures when the men’s basketball team wins.

Hey RG3, I guess you just couldn’t let Griner have the spotlight that she deserved.  It’s okay being the #2 athlete at Baylor University, you will also be #2 in the NFL draft!  At this moment you are the #2 athlete in Waco Texas, because the #1 spot belongs to Brittany Griner!
