Diddy or Didn't he?

Diddy or Didn't he?

We have reached the half-way point of this lockout shortened NBA Season and so it’s time for NBA All-Star Weekend.  The weekend will be capped off with the 61st annual All-Star game Sunday night.  It marks the unofficial half-way point of the season.  But before the big game is played on Sunday, basketball fanatics are treated to the always fun, always creative Slam-Dunk Contest.  But this years contest just didn’t seem to pack the same luster as years past.  It did however pack enough for me to blog about something.  Here we go.

I mean don’t get me wrong, its entertainment and if I was really…REALLY disappointed I simply would have turned it off.  Seriously though, David Stern the commissioner of the NBA should change the name of this contest to the “No Star Dunk Contest.”  The big names that used to participate in this, simply don’t want to participate anymore.

This year’s contestants were comprised of Houston’s Chase Budinger, Indiana’s Paul George, Minnesota’s Derrick Williams and Utah’s Jeremy Evans.  Who??????  I know what you mean…  No Dwight Howard…aka Superman, sorry folks.  No Blake Griffin, the guy that leaped over a car last year.  Oh and no little dunk man like Nate Robinson, who won this competition just a few years ago.  With that said, this years contest wasn’t lacking creativity.  These guys did everything they could to make it original and interesting but in my opinion the show was stolen before it got started.  So what was "All-The Hoop-Laa "about?  Well, P-Diddy opened his mouth and what came out seemed a bit odd to me...

Yes, P-Diddy holding his fist up in the air a-la Hitler and uttering the words “black power.”  Now I don’t want to make this into a huge racially charged blog…but seriously Diddy?  On National TV you can say that…and because it's Diddy that makes it okay?  Really?  Someone please help me understand how that is acceptable but "chink in the armor" isn't?  (See previous blog entry)

Anyhow I can’t help but think what people would be saying if some white person held up their fist at the start of the All-Star Dunk contest on national television and said “white power.”  I guess it’s only racist if the word “white” is used…

To me it wasn't the time or place to say anything like that.  It wasn't the time or place to promote his stupid new network.  This was a family event, an All-Star basketball dunk contest.  Celebrities should try to keep their mouths shut at events like this!  News alert: It's not about you, it's about the event!

Oh, by the way, congratulations to Utah’s Jeremy Evans, he won the contest.

  1. I also thought this was an odd statement to say at that given moment. I really like how you touch on the different aspects within sports, other than the traditional games themselves.

  2. Diddy can do whatever he wants. Check yourself before you wreck yourself, as I've heard it said.
